Is your space starting to feel stale? Are you tired of walking into the same room every single day. Maybe you’re already planning on remodeling a room but lacking the inspiration. Many creative professionals look outwards for inspiration and you can too! New home builders will usually contract designers to design their model home interiors. You can use these interiors to help inspire you in your own home. Before you go out and visit some model homes, check out this list of things to look out for.
Layers – Good lighting comes in layers. You can see in this example, in a model from Ivory Homes, that you have the lights hanging as well as recessed lighting. The hanging lights can help the ceiling feel a little taller and create a more inviting atmosphere.
Consider the space – Lighting should be tailored to the room. Bright white lights like in the kitchen above are excellent in a kitchen. It helps you see everything you are doing as you cook, but you may not want bright white lights this intense where you watch TV as it could create a glare.
Accent lighting – You can use light to draw peoples’ attention towards something. Light could be directed at the center of a table and has been shown to draw people in. You can also have light directed at artwork on the wall to help draw peoples’ eyes there. Next time you walk through a model home, look for anything that is popping out to you and see if there is a light shining on it.
2. Asymmetrical Balance
Asymmetrical balance has to do with the visual weight of objects in a room. Look at the model home interiors like the one pictured above. Arive homes has the black sofa on the left and rather than a matching sofa on the right they have two chairs and an end table. Visually, both sides appear to carry the same weight so there is balance but it’s not exactly the same so it’s asymmetrical. You can see the same concept a second time in the same photo above the fireplace. On the left there is a plant and on the right there are candles. This is asymmetrical balance and done right it can be very pleasing to look at. Try finding examples of asymmetrical balance the next time you walk through a model home and then try implementing it in your own home.
3. Interior color schemes
Unless you have a natural knack for design, it can be hard to figure out on your own which colors look good together. Lucky for you, there’s a simple tool you can use right here to help you. It’s a color wheel with a bit of a guide.
This is just one example of a color wheel, there are plenty more on the internet that can help serve your needs as well. If you use the guides to the right of the wheel you can see which colors go well together. You can see in the photo of the model home interior from Lennar homes that they pair a tint of green and red together. It looks great and confirms that the color wheel works! Look around your home or some model homes near you and see if you can pick out which color combinations are being used.
4. Model home interiors have unity
One of the best parts of seeing interior design within a model home is seeing unity throughout the home. Each room is designed to be it’s own, but to go with the rest of the house as well. This really can make the difference between just being somewhere you sleep and being somewhere you’re excited to come home to everyday. The beautiful thing about unity is that in a way it can mean whatever you want it to. As great as an example as model homes can be for “unity”, they also play it safe. They want to models to appeal to the masses, not one individual with unique taste. Remember in the end that it is your home and that should be reflected in how you end up designing your home.
5. Negative Space
Within interior design, negative space refers to everywhere where there is nothing. Look at how beautiful the interior of this model home is pictured above. This room leaves a lot of space between everything and it feels more open and inviting. It can be easy to love so much decor that you overdecorate a space and it just becomes cluttered. Don’t be afraid of leaving some extra space for nothing at all. As the saying goes sometimes less is more.
